Maharashtra Governor and Prince Edward Discuss Collaboration in Education and Trade

Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II visited the British School in Delhi on 3 February. The Prince engaged with students and toured various school stalls. He had discussions with students from different schools, showing interest in their work and projects. This visit marks his first official trip to India since being conferred the Dukedom of Edinburgh in 2023 by King Charles III. Following his visit to India, the Duke of Edinburgh is expected to join The Duchess of Edinburgh for a visit to Nepal. During his three-day visit to India, Prince also met with Maharashtra Governor and Chancellor of State Universities C.P. Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai on 1st February.

He expressed satisfaction with the growing India-UK relations and emphasized the UK's desire for further collaboration. As Chancellor of the University of Bath, he highlighted the potential mutual benefits of education cooperation, according to a statement from Raj Bhavan Maharashtra. Additionally, the Prince, known for championing the Duke of Edinburgh Award, highlighted the importance of vocational education and learning beyond the classroom. In response, Governor Radhakrishnan welcomed him, calling India and the UK two of the “greatest democracies in the world.” The Maharashtra Governor noted that Indian students adapt easily to the UK’s education system and emphasized higher education as a key area for collaboration between India and the UK. He also highlighted potential cooperation in sectors like Green Energy, Pharma, and Hospital Management, praising the UK’s expertise. As Chancellor of Universities in Maharashtra, he expressed his intention to encourage vice-chancellors to establish MoUs with UK universities.

The Maharashtra Governor highlighted India’s rise as a major global economy and stressed the importance of strengthening trade ties with the UK, including the need for a Free Trade Agreement. He and Prince Edward discussed the idea of hosting a Commonwealth Festival of Business and Culture, alongside the Commonwealth Festival of Sports. The Governor also suggested the UK should play a key role in advancing football development in India, alongside the popularity of cricket.

Prince Edward praised the growth of cricket in India, especially after the IPL, and commended India's excellence in badminton. The statement from Raj Bhavan Maharashtra also mentioned the presence of key dignitaries, including Harjinder Kang, Deputy High Commissioner of the UK for Western India, Alex Potts, Private Secretary to The Duke, and John Nickell, Head of Political and Bilateral Affairs. Overall, Prince Edward’s visit to India highlights the strengthening ties between India and the UK, with a focus on education, trade, and sports collaboration.
