Purdue University Enhances Educational Ties with India: New Centres Focus on Joint Degrees and Semiconductor Innovation

Founded in 1869, Purdue University has a long-standing relationship with India that dates back to 125 years. The Indian student community at Purdue constitutes the university's largest international student population, with over 3,000 students from India, and 300 faculty, researchers, and staff at Purdue who are of Indian origin.

Recently, the university has further strengthened its educational ties with India by launching two significant initiatives: the Purdue-India Centre for Education and Engagement and a US-India Centre of Excellence in Semiconductors. Indiana Senator Todd Young and US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti announced these initiatives on November 1 during a fireside chat. This initiative aims to foster joint degrees, industry relations, and alumni engagement, with support from both governments. Purdue expressed enthusiasm about expanding its long-standing partnership with Indian institutions and companies across various disciplines.

The Purdue-India Centre for Education and Engagement will serve as a central hub in India to strengthen Purdue's network. This includes offering joint degrees in high-demand fields in partnership with strategic Indian institutions. The centre also aims to enhance Purdue's connections with government and industry, establish partnerships with local universities, engage alumni, and boost student recruitment. US-India Centre for Excellence in Semiconductors involves engaging with leaders from the semiconductor industry to advance joint research and develop a skilled workforce. This initiative aligns with Purdue's land-grant mission in research, learning, and engagement.

Purdue President Mung Chiang noted that the Purdue-India centres would enhance the university's presence in India and create new pathways for collaborative education in fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, and business through partnerships with Indian institutions. Both the new Centre for Education and Engagement in Delhi and the US-India Centre of Excellence in Semiconductors, established in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and supported by the Indian and US governments, represent milestone steps toward enhancing this strategic partnership. These initiatives present numerous opportunities for students and faculty while further elevating Purdue’s global impact.

In September, a delegation from Purdue engaged with Indian government officials, leading academic institutions, and industry leaders to discuss educational collaboration, expanded research, and other initiatives. Senator Todd Young remarked that Purdue's growing connections provide both the US and India with the tools necessary for ongoing global success. He emphasized that forward-thinking strategies like these could establish a foundation for encouraging two-way trade and investment in the tech sector, particularly in high-impact areas such as semiconductors and AI.

During his visit to New Delhi, US Ambassador Eric Garcetti met with Purdue's delegation and explored new ways for the university to enhance its support for mutual goals in areas like AI, quantum computing, and critical technologies. He noted that Purdue has significant support in India and has shown its commitment to both Indian industry and academia. Establishing a presence in India empowers students in both nations and strengthens workforce and educational ties. Garcetti commended Purdue's leadership and the institutional partnerships that contribute greatly to the US-India relationship.

The university has also become the flagship academic partner for semiconductors with the Indian government, emphasizing joint research and development as well as talent training in this vital field. Senator Young and Ambassador Garcetti toured Purdue's Birck Nanotechnology Centre, which houses the university's semiconductor research facilities, including the Scifres Nanofabrication Laboratory, one of the largest cleanrooms in an academic setting in the US.
