The Chevening Scholarship is a renowned and fully funded programme offered by the UK Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), in collaboration with a range of partner organisations. It enables exceptional individuals from more than 160 countries and territories to undertake one-year master’s degrees at leading universities across the United Kingdom.

Since its establishment in 1983, Chevening has supported over 60,000 scholars, many of whom have gone on to assume influential roles in government, business, academia, and civil society. With approximately 1,500 scholarships awarded annually, the programme remains highly competitive. Applicants must demonstrate not only academic excellence but also strong leadership potential, relevant work experience, and a clear commitment to driving positive change in their home countries.

To be eligible, candidates must hold an undergraduate degree, possess at least two years of professional experience (equivalent to 2,800 hours), and apply to three eligible master’s programmes in the UK. In addition to covering tuition fees, the scholarship provides funding for travel, visa costs, and living expenses. Crucially, Chevening scholars gain access to a dynamic global network of professionals, fostering opportunities for career development, intercultural exchange, and enduring collaboration.

Over the past four decades, the programme has received hundreds of thousands of applications worldwide. Successful candidates are expected to present compelling, evidence-based examples of leadership, influence, and networking capabilities. In Bangladesh, for instance, more than 372 individuals have received Chevening awards since 1983, reflecting the UK’s sustained commitment to nurturing leadership and innovation. British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cooke, recently affirmed the programme’s role in empowering some of the country’s brightest minds and strengthening international ties through education.
