Climate Compatible Growth (CCG), a UK Aid-funded initiative led by the University’s Centre for Sustainable Transitions: Energy, Environment, and Resilience (STEER), works with developing countries to design investment-ready proposals that attract crucial climate finance and funding for clean energy infrastructure projects. Furthermore, the program received a £57 million boost from the UK Government to support its transformative work through 2030.
The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP 29), which is the decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), brings together governments and experts from around the world to formulate updated strategies for addressing climate challenges. The event witnessed delegations from Loughborough University, including experts from CCG. They will lead and engage in various events covering key topics such as climate finance, capacity building, transport decarbonization, and the development of global green grids.
This session is part of a broader series of activities in which Loughborough University is represented by its Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) program. This UK Aid-funded initiative aims to accelerate the global shift from biomass to clean cooking solutions. Among its activities at the conference is a high-level side event at the Blue Zone’s Africa Pavilion, where a major new publication on ‘clean cooking’ in Africa will be launched. This publication is being led by the African Energy Commission of the African Union, in collaboration with the MECS program.
Professor Mark Howells, an expert in Systems Analysis for Sustainable Development in Loughborough’s Department of Geography and Environment and co-director of STEER, is leading the CCG delegation at COP 29. He is a featured speaker at an event organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the UNFCCC Blue Zone, where he will address the integration of water resources into climate mitigation strategies. He has played a pivotal role in strengthening the partnership that enables the world’s leading open-source energy modeling and planning tools to be accessible to countries undertaking their transition to clean energy.
Experts, including Dr. Simon Batchelor, will participate in sessions focused on renewable-based clean cooking and the scaling of electric cooking, highlighting progress made by the Global Electric Cooking Coalition (GeCCo), which was launched at COP 28. GeCCo brings together experts and advocates from around the world, including the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) program, to address the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions generated by traditional cooking methods. The coalition aims to accelerate the transition to cleaner, more sustainable cooking solutions by promoting electric cooking technologies.
In conclusion, the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP 29) serves as a pivotal platform for global climate action. Initiatives like Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) and Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) underscore the critical role of international collaboration in tackling climate challenges.
