Curtin University’s Long-Term Strategy Supported by Vice-Chancellor’s Continued Tenure

University Governance: Curtin Extends Professor Harlene Hayne’s Leadership

Curtin University has reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence and strategic development with the announcement that Professor Harlene Hayne CNZM, the Vice-Chancellor, will continue to lead the institution until 2031. This decision, made by Curtin University’s Council, highlights the confidence placed in her leadership and the substantial progress made during her tenure.

Dr Vanessa Guthrie AO, Curtin’s Chancellor, emphasised that Professor Hayne’s reappointment for a further five years reflects the University’s strong advancements in delivering on its 2030 Strategic Plan, despite the challenges faced. Under her leadership, Curtin has continued to enhance its research innovation, global engagement, and educational excellence, ensuring that the University remains a leading institution both within Australia and internationally.

In particular, Dr Guthrie praised Professor Hayne for her success in enhancing Curtin’s global standing, fostering impactful research and industry partnerships, and launching initiatives that align with the University’s mission to make a difference. Moreover, she highlighted Hayne’s involvement in the Federal Government’s Universities Accord Review, her effective responses to sector challenges, and her achievement of securing the highest employers’ satisfaction level for Curtin graduates across all Australian universities. Additionally, Dr Guthrie noted that under Hayne’s leadership, the University has expanded its global presence through Curtin Colombo.

Dr Guthrie further emphasised Professor Hayne’s role as Chair of the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) for the past two years, where her leadership has been essential during a critical period for the sector. Dr Guthrie also expressed her satisfaction with Professor Hayne’s continued representation of the sector through her recent appointment to the Universities Australia Board.

Furthermore, Dr Guthrie acknowledged Professor Hayne’s unwavering focus on placing students at the heart of Curtin’s mission, commending her commitment to providing an exceptional student experience that equips graduates for both their careers and life. Professor Hayne herself expressed her honour in continuing to serve the Curtin community, sharing her pride in how the University’s students, staff, and partners embody its core values. She reiterated Curtin’s commitment to educating future generations, fostering innovation, and enriching the communities it serves.

Dr Guthrie highlighted that the unanimous decision to extend Professor Hayne’s tenure reflects a shared confidence in her leadership and ability to guide Curtin through its next phase of growth. Professor Hayne, who was appointed Vice-Chancellor in April 2021, will begin her renewed tenure in April 2026, as Curtin continues to build on its bold vision for the future.
