Young and Unstoppable: D. Gukesh Shines as the World’s New Chess Champion
Historic Win: D. Gukesh Defeats Ding Liren to Become World Chess Champion
Dec 14, 2024 |
India is brimming with pride as 18-year-old D. Gukesh from Chennai made history on December 12, 2024, by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. In the final held in Sentosa, Singapore, he defeated China’s Ding Liren after 58 intense moves, securing the title with 7.5 points and breaking Garry Kasparov’s nearly 40-year-old record. His victory made tie-breaker games, scheduled for December 13. However, his triumph in the decisive game rendered that unnecessary.
This landmark achievement was the first World Championship match between two Asian countries India and China. The young champion joins Viswanathan Anand and Ding Liren as the third Asian to win the title. Becoming the 18th World Chess Champion in history, a title held by only 17 players since 1886, his journey was not without challenges. After losing the first game and drawing the second, he bounced back in the third, levelling the match at 1.5-1.5. Seven consecutive draws followed, and he took the lead in game 11, only for Ding to equalize, making it a thrilling contest to the end.
Ding Liren, the reigning champion, secured his place in Singapore by defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi in last year’s World Championship, while Gukesh earned his spot by winning the Candidates Tournament in Toronto. His remarkable journey also contributes to India’s historic double gold at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, alongside fellow Indians R. Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi, making India only the third country after the Soviet Union and China to achieve this feat.
His performance at the Olympiad, where he won individual gold on the top board, further solidified his status as a rising chess star. This success continued in 2022, when he won eight consecutive games at the Chennai Chess Olympiad, marking a pivotal moment in his career. D.Gukesh’s achievement at the World Chess Championships is an example of exceptional talent, resilience and determination. His success left a mark in the world’s chess history and elevated India’s stature on the international chess stage.
Editor's Note:
