The Union Health Ministry has cleared the commencement of MBBS programs at five new medical institutions in Uttar Pradesh. The medical colleges at Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur now have 100 MBBS seats each, previously it had 50. This expansion added 600 new seats, making the total seats 1200 for the academic year 2024-25.
The announcement disclosed that Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had collaborated, prompting the medical college principals to file an appeal with the National Medical Commission (NMC). Seven medical colleges received recognition after the initial appeal. The statement states that of the 11,200 MBBS seats available, 5,150 are in government medical colleges and 6,050 are in private medical colleges.
The department has requested permission from the Union Health Ministry to add 100 MBBS seats at autonomous state medical schools in Auraiya, Chandauli, Gonda, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Kaushambi, according to DG Medical Education Kinjal Singh. She added that one of the requests in the application was to raise the number of MBBS seats at Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur from 50 to 100. These requests were granted by the ministry, adding 600 more MBBS places to these universities.
