Tree Plantation Drive at Pondicherry University Aims for a Greener Future

On January 3, Pondicherry University held a tree plantation event at its Silver Jubilee campus, planting 1,040 saplings to restore the green cover lost due to cyclone Fengal, which had uprooted 104 trees. The event was inaugurated by the chief rector of the university and lieutenant governor of Puducherry, K Kailashnathan, who emphasized the importance of afforestation in addressing climate change and enhancing resilience to natural disasters.

The event was presided over by PML Kalyanasundaram, Member of Legislative Assembly (Kalapet), and K Tharanikkarasu, Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University. Kalyanasundaram urged the youth to actively participate in conservation efforts, emphasizing that environmental care is an ongoing responsibility. K Tharanikkarasu highlighted that the tree plantation initiative was not just about restoring what was lost, but also about creating a greener campus for future generations. Arulrajan, Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, Government of Puducherry, emphasized the importance of afforestation in preserving regional biodiversity and combating climate change.

Mathimaran Natarajan, Special Officer for the Green Campus initiative at the university, remarked the initiative is laying the foundation for a sustainable future. Clement S Lourdes, Director of Culture & Cultural Relations, Rajneesh Bhutani, Registrar (i/c), and M Vijayakumar, University Librarian, were also present at the event, which saw participation from students, faculty members, officers, and staff. The collective effort in planting saplings reinforced a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and reflected the university’s dedication to integrating ecological restoration with its academic mission.
