City University of Hong Kong (CityU), established in 1984 as the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong and fully accredited in 1994, is a public research university in Kowloon. In an exclusive interview with the China Media Group (Asia Pacific), the President of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) discussed the institution’s efforts in promoting international education and advancing research. He highlighted the Hong Kong government's commitment to positioning the city as an international education hub and strengthening the "Study in Hong Kong" brand with CityUHK actively supporting this initiative. The President emphasized the university's global collaborations, particularly with Belt and Road Initiative countries, and its efforts to attract international students through scholarships and exchange programmes.
President Boey highlighted CityUHK’s Distinguished Visiting Professor Scheme, which has successfully attracted renowned scholars from institutions like the University of Cambridge, Harvard University, and MIT. Since its launch in 2023, the scheme has brought over 50 world-class scholars to collaborate with CityUHK faculty and students on interdisciplinary research. Hong Kong has a bright future as an international higher education hub, citing strong university efforts and government support. However, Hong Kong could leverage its strategic advantages and collaborate with mainland universities in cities like Beijing and Shanghai to advance higher education in Asia. Recently, CityUHK advanced to 10th place in the QS Asia University Rankings 2025, a seven-spot improvement from the previous year, and ranked third in Hong Kong. President Boey highlighted the university's commitment to promoting international education and advancing innovative research.
The university has focused on attracting top global talent and expanding its international presence to foster a diverse and dynamic academic environment. Emphasizing that the word "University" encompasses "Universe," the President highlighted the importance of a global perspective in university management. Over the past year, CityUHK members have travelled worldwide to attract international talent to the institution.
In celebration of its 30th anniversary, CityUHK launched several new institutes, including the Academy of Innovation, the Institute of Digital Medicine, the College of Computing, and the Hong Kong Institute of AI for Science. The university is committed to translating research outcomes into practical applications through these institutes, which offer attractive measures and support for young scholars interested in entrepreneurship.
