New GEMS School in Dubai: A Fusion of Luxury and Innovative Learning
Jan 29, 2025 |
As technology continues to advance, the education system is evolving, offering students facilities and opportunities never seen before. A prime example of this modernization is Dubai-based GEMS Education, one of the largest private school groups globally. GEMS Education is set to open the GEMS School of Research and Innovation in Dubai Sports City, which will be the most expensive school in the Gulf. With a construction cost of $100 million, this school is expected to feature state-of-the-art facilities and charge some of the highest fees worldwide, reflecting its commitment to providing a cutting-edge educational experience.
Sunny Varkey, born to teachers Mariama and KS Varkey from Kerala, India, inherited his parents' educational legacy. They founded Our Own English High School in Dubai in 1968, and Sunny expanded it after regulations required purpose-built facilities. Recognizing the demand for premium education, he introduced schools for various nationalities in the UAE and founded Global Education Management Systems (GEMS) in 2000 to expand internationally. Under his leadership, GEMS established schools across England, India, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the US.
The new GEMS School of Research and Innovation is set to feature facilities, including a 600-seat auditorium, Olympic-sized swimming pool, elevated football field, robotics labs, and AR/VR learning centres. Annual tuition fees will start at AED 116,000 for early years and rise to AED 206,000 for senior students, making it one of the Gulf's most expensive schools. It was noted that while GEMS ranks among the top schools in the Gulf, several elite schools worldwide charge even higher fees. For instance, Institut auf dem Rosenberg in St. Gallen, Switzerland, reportedly charges Rs 1,52,05,748 ($176,000) annually. Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley, California, was said to charge Rs 77,75,667 ($90,000) per year, while Eton College in the UK has fees of Rs 22,24,634 (£21,099) annually.
The GEMS School of Research and Innovation is expected to set new standards for educational excellence by combining luxury with cutting-edge learning tools, aiming to prepare students for the future.
