58 Scientists from Pune Recognized in Prestigious Stanford University Rankings

It’s time to celebrate the achievements of Pune’s scientific community, as they bring glory to India through their exceptional research work and years of dedication in the field of science. The annual Stanford University rankings are widely recognized as a credible source for identifying the top 2% of scientists globally and this ranking lists universities.
The University has recognized 58 scientists from Pune in its prestigious ranking of the top 2% of scientists globally. This distinguished group includes 14 from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), 11 from Symbiosis International University (SIU), 12 from the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), 9 from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), 4 from the Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune, 4 from DY Patil Vidyapeeth, and 1 each from the Pulmocare Research and Education (PURE) Foundation, KEM Hospital, Armed Forces Medical College, and the College of Engineering Pune (COEP).
The University released its latest rankings, which cover 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields on September 17 to identify the world’s leading scientists based on standardized citation metrics and to highlight the most influential researchers globally. Among the 223,252 scientists in the top 2% worldwide across all fields, India has seen an increase in the number of scientists listed, rising to 5,352 from 4,635 in 2023.
Dr. Ramakrishnan Raman, Vice-Chancellor of Symbiosis International (Deemed) University, expressed immense pride in the university’s achievement, highlighting its commitment to excellence in research and interdisciplinary innovation, as 11 faculty members are recognized in the global top 2% of scientists, it marked the dedication of the faculty who strive for academic excellence. Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Pro-VC of SIU, also commented that this recognition reflects the exceptional work being done by the institution in the realm of impactful research. Dr. Sundeep Salvi has been recognized as the number one respiratory scientist in India for the fourth consecutive year, and his global ranking has improved from 50th in 2023 to 35th this year, out of 65,702 respiratory scientists worldwide, this contribution significantly highlighted Pune on the global map of lung research.
Similarly, Dr. Chittaranjan Yajnik, a prominent diabetologist at KEM Hospital in Pune, has also maintained his position in the top 2% of scientists globally for the fourth straight year. The pioneering research in diabetes got international recognition through several landmark studies and the research on the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) provides hope for future generations. Promoting good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle among young girls could help break the cycle of intergenerational diabetes and cardiovascular disease among Indians.
The significant findings of this research could guide policymakers in making informed decisions for the right reasons. At IUCAA, Professor Surhud More remarked that the significant number of scientists from Pune included in the rankings highlights not only the volume but also the quality of scientific research being conducted in various fields within the city.
