SDU Launches Non-Degree Pathway to Undergraduate Study for Foreign Applicants

Shandong University (SDU), one of China’s oldest and most respected institutions, has announced the opening of applications for its 2025 Undergraduate Preparatory Programme, aimed at international students seeking to pursue undergraduate studies in China. The programme is designed to provide intensive training in the Chinese language and academic foundations, enabling students to meet the requirements of Chinese-taught undergraduate degrees.

University officials indicated that the programme is open to non-Chinese citizens who are in good physical and mental health, possess a valid foreign passport, and have completed secondary education. For the one-year programme commencing in September 2025, no prior Chinese language proficiency is required. However, those applying for the one-semester programme beginning in February 2026 must hold an HSK Level 3 certificate with a minimum score of 180. Additionally, non-native English speakers are expected to submit proof of English proficiency, such as IELTS (minimum score 6.0), TOEFL (above 80), or equivalent certification.

The curriculum reportedly includes a combination of intensive Chinese language modules, such as Comprehensive Chinese, Listening and Speaking, and Chinese Characters and Writing, alongside major preparation courses in subjects like Mathematics and Chemistry. Supplementary modules include Medical or Business Chinese and targeted HSK skill training. Students who perform well may be granted priority admission to SDU’s undergraduate programmes or recommended to other Chinese universities. Tuition for the programme has been set at RMB 22,000 (approximately USD 3,073). Accommodation fees vary depending on room type and building, ranging from RMB 300 to RMB 5,850. Monthly living expenses are estimated between RMB 1,000 and RMB 1,500. Applicants are also required to pay an application fee of USD 82 and a service fee of USD 200, both collected via the authorised platform CUCAS.

To apply, candidates must complete the online application form via SDU’s official portal, upload the required documents, and pay the necessary fees. Required materials include a high school diploma and transcripts (with notarised translations if not in Chinese or English), passport information, a recent passport photo, a certificate of no criminal record, a Foreigner Physical Examination Form, a letter of motivation, financial guarantee documents showing deposits of at least RMB 30,000, and guardian documentation for applicants under 18. Students already studying in China must also submit transfer certificates, attendance records, and residence permits.

The university stated that applicants would be assessed through document review, interviews, and potentially written tests, with final admission based on academic performance. Admitted students must register at SDU within the specified timeframe and present original copies of all required documents for verification. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

In addition to the programme, SDU offers a range of scholarships to support outstanding international students. These include the Chinese Government Scholarship (Type A and B), the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, the International Confucian Association Scholarship, the Jinan Sister City Scholarship, and the Shandong University Scholarship for Outstanding International Students.
